Sample Summary - Nakhla

Nakhla fell in Egypt in 1911 and is the type specimen for nakhlites. It is available for research from the Geological Survey of Egypt in Cairo, with secondary specimens at the British Museum and Smithsonian Institution. The mineral compositions of the cumulate augite and olivine are not in equilibrium, but reflect diffusion or annealing during slow cooling. Weathering of silicates is minor, while development of salts is insignificant.
