Instructions for the Return of Antarctic Meteorite Samples to
NASA Johnson Space Center

  1. ACCOUNTABILITY & HISTORY

    1. Use Official Sample Numbers According to Your Sample Inventory. You may obtain a current listing of your samples by contacting the Sample Control Center at 281-483-2254 or FAX 281-483-5347.

    2. If the sample is a thin section or probe mount, and it has been subjected to ion-probe, proton-probe, laser-ablation, micro-coring or another destructive method or unusual technique, documentation of the technique must be sent with the sample on a Meteorite Sample Analysis Record form. Please download or obtain the Sample Analysis form to list the type of destructive techniques and sample coatings (Au, C or otherwise) applied to the sample.

  2. PACKAGING

    Prepare packages so that they are strong and resistant to damage. Container strength and sealing provisions should be compatible with requirements of registered mail with the U.S. Postal Service.

  3. TRANSMITTAL BY INVESTIGATORS IN THE UNITED STATES

    Send Samples by Registered Mail* or an Express Mail Service to the following address:

    * A RETURN RECEIPT should be requested when REGISTERED MAIL is used. Also, the U.S. Government acts as a self-insurer. Do not obtain postal insurance for meteorite samples transmitted by the U.S. Postal Service.
  4. TRANSMITTAL BY INVESTIGATORS OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES

    Foreign PI's Must Send Samples by Express Mail Service. Send samples to the following address:
